Lesson 1

LESSON 1

In our first session, we looked at the different games that we would be workshopping with our participants. With the type of students we were going to have, we had to make sure they were appropriate for a first session situation where not everyone would know each other. They also had to be games where people didn't get "out" so that our participants wouldn't get bored.

We looked at games such as:

King Chair - This game, everyone sits in a circle and is numbered 1 to the highest number appropriate to how many people are in the game. The person after the highest number is called "king'. The aim of the game is to get the king out by saying your number and then passing it to another number. If you are too slow or say the wrong number then you are demoted all the way down to number one.

The Bottle Game - You in 2 teams sitting opposite each other holding hands. Someone flips a coin and if it lands on heads, two people at one end of the line send a squeeze down their line and there is a bottle at the other end. Whoever out of the two people at the other end grabs the bottle first, wins a point. If a squeeze is sent and the coin landed on tails then your team loses a point.

What I'm looking forward to:
Being able to interact with young people who haven't had the experience of performing before, and seeing them experience it.

What I'm anxious about:
Whether everyone will be interested in what were doing and want to collaborate.

We looked at the question "Do schools fail young people, or do young people fail schools?"

It is difficult to come to a definite answer as many people have different experiences with schools. In my opinion, in some ways, schools do fail young people but that doesn't mean the teachers are failing them, as I have had many dedicated teachers who love what they do. I think it's partly the government who in some ways have turned schools into business models and take advantage.
